Life.. Purpose.. Exploration

Last weekend I saw "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty". I liked that movie a lot. I have a lot of personal reasons as well which I might discuss later. In case you haven't seen the movie or read the book let me try to put it in words without spoiling it for you.
The movie is about the transformation of Walter Mitty as he discovers his purpose in life. It talks about courage, purpose, experiences, dreams and how all these elements are important for our well being. It talks about rekindling the inner fire every once in a while. Like they say..
"The courage is found in unlikely places", Walter Mitty embarks on a journey which changes his life..
It is a very inspiring movie and I suggest that you go and watch it.

"To see things thousands of miles away,
things hidden behind walls and within rooms,
things dangerous to come to, to draw closer,
to see and be amazed."

So I was quite excited to read the reviews and I was quite amused to see the way bloggers have written about the movie. Well 99% of the blogs that I have read thrashed the movie right away.. Most of the bloggers talked about how the short story was dumbed down. All of them also mentioned that in these movies a person does not measure up to anything unless he has been there, done something or in short traveled around..

Well in all honesty, The original story(1945) was changed to keep up pace with the times.
Speaking of measuring up, I think our experiences build our character.  I don't think experiences can only be gained by traveling. Methinks that the moment you sail away from the safe harbor you gain experience. What better way than exploring new places? To be honest, traveling means different to different people. For some, it is about clicking "those" facebook photos for the virtual acknowledgment of "Been There, Done that", some take pleasure in striking that place off from their list. I hate it when people make it sound like a set of instructions.. MUST-SEE/ TOP 10 things. In my case it is aimless, it is about getting out of my comfort zone, it is about learning new things. I just like the idea of being in the moment, new surroundings, new roads, new buildings, new cuisine, new faces, new scenery. In that process I end up exploring new things. I make my own TOP 10 list, my own rules, my own stories, my own memories.. isn't that an experience in itself?

There is so much more to write about this subject. Maybe, another time. Before I sign out here's a couplet from one of my favorite poets - T.S Eliot.

"We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time"

Life is nothing but a continuous exploration.

  1. Wow, I quite liked your perspective on traveling. I travel in a more conformist way with a top 10, must see, must do list. But maybe someday I will learn to travel like you. Interesting idea, methinks :)
